Biography
Maria Strnisha is 2018 graduate of Slippery Rock University (SRU) where she obtained both a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She formerly trained at the Sandra Kay Mesler Dance Studio in her hometown of Washington, PA. Her background of assistant teaching dance classes, teaching third grade at Montclair Elementary in Northern Virginia, and choreographing for students at SRU has built her desire to combine dance and education. She has a passion for learning about other cultures through dance and traveled to Cartagena, Colombia through SRU’s Afro-Colombian Dance Ensemble to study dance in the summer of 2017. Upon making the Dean’s List every semester of her collegiate career, Maria has also received a Presidential Scholar Award and various scholarships. She was presented with the 2018 Outstanding Dance Teacher award by SRU's Department of Dance faculty.

Artist Statement
I am a dancer, instructor, and artist. Encouraging creativity and development through movement is what drives my passion for dance and instruction. Finding harmony in individuality while teaching technical skills provides a solid basis for a well-rounded dancer and human. Using dance to teach others about themselves and the bigger pictures around them is a goal I strive for. I am inspired by issues of the world and how dance can be used to educate others about them. I believe that instilling dance education on others and using dance as a means to shed light upon fixing what is damaged can create a sense of peace. Finding ways to lift others through dance can provide them with strength and togetherness.
